In our humanities class we did an extension of HTHCV XONR8 called XONR8 Theatre. During XONR8 Theatre my group took an interesting chance to explore a career that pertains to the justice system.
For this project, I was inVerbatim theatre is a type of theatre-making where the text is generated from interviews with 'real life' people (Reference). So everything that Vincent fernando said in the play was said in the interview.
a group with 3 other students (Todd, Anna, and Brandon) and we interviewed my uncle about his job as a homicide detective. Using his interview, we transcribed the interview to make a verbatim play. " After interviewing my uncle, we made an interview map. In our interview map we focused on the time, who was talking and what were they talking about. The interview map is supposed to be a way for you to easily find a part of your interview without actually having to listen to the whole thing.
Interview Map |
Before we wrote the first draft of the script, we each came up with an individual script outline. Using our interview map we took out parts of the interview that might not be useful for the play. This became very useful to see which parts of the interview stuck with the majority of the group. We also noticed that our individual outlines were very similar to each other making it easier to create a first draft of our script.
Individual Script Outline |
After each run- through that we did, we noticed things that could be fixed in our play. So we revised relentlessly until our script was ready for exhibition.
Final Script |
Reflection | A moment that sums up the play was at the Onstage Playhouse. We went to the On Stage Play House to rehearse and familiarize ourselves with the set.On the day of exhibition, one of my group members didn't show up. We were forced to recast his role. On top of a missing group member, we didn't realise that our lead actor was from the other pod and unable to attend the rehearsals. He could have still done the play but he wouldn't have practiced it with the lights or other actors. So we made the executive decision to recast his role as well. Originally I was going to play the interviewer and since I was the most familiar with the script, I played my uncle, Vincent Fernando, and we recasted my role as well. My contribution to the play was pretty even with that of Todd and Anna. We each took on 15 minutes for the interview map and transcription. I also helped my group write our script using the script outline. Along with helping out my group, I also acted in Emane, Gabriel, Melissa, and Evelyn's play. I am most proud of achieving the interview transcript. It was actually really fun listening to the interview and actually getting to read it. I have learned to cooperate with my group because without my group it would have been almost impossible for me to transcribe 1 hour worth of interview by myself in the time frame that we had. |
